Q. Can I make a request for my child to play with his/her friends?

A. Yes. During the Summer season only, whenever possible.

3rd through 8th Grade Winter Season is a draft and the League runs competitive play divisions. Drafts are based on try-outs and a Coach selection process to ensure the teams are as evenly and competitively balanced as possible. Many components go into this process in order to put together a team that is well-rounded, fun yet competitive and avoid “stacking” and / or “bias” team building.

Kindergarten thru 2nd grade Winter Seasons players can request to play with certain coaches and friends and efforts are made to accommodate requests when possible with no guarantee as multiple factors affect this request, as noted above. Note: children from the same school and same street are typically given a heightened priority to attempt to keep on the same team whenever possible.

Q: My child is very talented at basketball. Can I register for a higher grade than they are currently in so they get better competition and development?

A.    No. Players play with their grade level classmates and are not eligible to “play up” based on their talent/skill level. Because, in part, Players offer a variety of skill levels, maturity and talent, therefore talent alone is only one component of a balanced player and a balanced team. The PVBA recognizes players that may be very talented and will consistently outperform their peers, however, throughout the 30 seasons at PVBA, the benefits of keeping the player with their grade level far outweigh the negatives.

Q:  What is the Wait List Policy?

A. Space fills up quickly and is limited per team and grade level. Some divisions fill up quicker than others. In this case, the PVBA gives priority to returning PVBA players on all wait lists as well as priority is given to coaches and returning alumni.  Players will be notified at the time they register if they have been placed on a Wait List. We will clear players from the Wait List when there are sufficient players to form a complete team of 8 players and when  the PVBA can provide the necessary resources to support the additions such as Coaching, additional scheduling etc.

It is our intent to clear players from the Wait List prior to the tryouts whenever possible. However all registrants, whether they have been cleared from the Wait List or not, are expected to attend and participate in the tryouts. Players will be cleared from the Wait List in the order in which they registered. Players may remain on the Wait List until the winter holiday break begins in the event that another player drops from the league or suffers a season-ending injury. Once the winter holiday break begins, the Wait List will be cleared and those registrations who were not cleared to play will be refunded.

Q:  When should we expect to hear from our child’s Coach?

A.    Coach’s typically make their first contact around the first week in November for the Winter league and a week prior to the commencement of the Summer season.

For the Winter League, following the tryouts in mid-October there will be a player draft held by each league's coaches in which the teams will be formed. To allow sufficient preparation time for the coaches, these drafts are generally held in the last week of October. The PVBA requests each coach at the conclusion of the draft to contact their new team players as soon as possible, so you should expect to hear from your coach in the first week of November. If you have not heard from your child's coach by November 8th, contact your Grade Coordinator listed on the PVBA’s “Contact’” of the PVBA website.

PVBA Summer Leagues are all about fun and finding a passion in basketball. As such, it is less formal. There are no tryouts nor is there a draft. Instead, teams are formed by the Grade Coordinators with an effort to maintain balance across the teams. Due to the tight time constraints with the end of school activities, these teams generally form the week prior to the beginning of PVBA’s games. You can expect to hear from your child's coach the weekend prior to the start of the summer season.

Q: I forgot to sign up my child for PVBA and the registration is closed.  Can I still get them in?

A.    Contact info@pvba.net to inquire.  If a late registration can be accepted a Late Registration fee applies.

Q: I registered my child but now we need to drop out. What is your drop out/refund policy?

A.    Any registration cancellation received prior to tryouts will be refunded in full.  A registered player notification between the time of the tryouts and the Draft Night will receive a refund of half the registration fee.   Following team drafts, any player who drops for any reason, including season-ending injury, will not be entitled to a refund. To notify the PVBA of a drop out, the notice must be sent via email to info@pvba.net as soon as possible to allow the PVBA to offer an open spot to a child on the Wait List.

Q: My child has a commitment to another sport and cannot make the Try-out dates. Is that a problem?

A.    Winter PBVA Try outs are mandatory. It is extremely important that each child attend a tryout session so that their skill level and capabilities can be evaluated in the context of their peers and competitive teams can be formed that are reasonably balanced. While we recognize conflicts and priorities happen, there are many moving pieces and a significant group effort that goes into establishing each league fairly. Therefore attendance at Try-outs are mandatory and we ask that you make every effort to attend, placing your scheduled tryout session as one of those priorities. PVBA reserves the right to cancel a registration of a player who fails to attend their scheduled session

Q: What is the PVBA Legacy Program?

A: The PVBA started this program 9 years ago. Exclusive to the PVBA and it's Alumni, the Legacy Program is another feature that keeps the PV community connected through the PVBA wherever and whenever their life's journey takes them. This program gives past PVBA players throughout High School an College the opportunity to come back in a new position to gain experience and credits by contributing back to current players and coaches in positions that include mentoring and supporting the program. The PVBA recognizes the challenges our High School Students and beyond face with limited options to gain experience and give back. It was through this community need that this program was developed and in response, it has grown far beyond imagination to become a valued and popular opportunity for our local youth and young adult Alumni. Positions fill up quickly.  Potential PVBA Alum register in advance. And every year the players, their families and the PVBA welcomes back dozens of its Alumni.

Q: I bought a PVBA Registration at a charity event. How do I go about using it to register my child?

A.     Congratulations!  Each year, the PVBA awards a limited number of Registrations to be offered at fundraising auctions associated with the PVPUSD. As a successful bidder in support of the school district, we thank you.

Send an email at info@pvba.net notifying the PVBA of your fundraiser Registration details and your intent to use the registration for the upcoming PVBA season. Because our online registration system does not allow registrations to be processed other than through a credit card, we will process your registration manually.
